We maintain and operate our fleet of 75+ gas reciprocating engines and gas turbines across multiple sites. These are monitored 24/7 by our highly skilled team of professional engineers located around the country. We operate our sites remotely from our control centre where we despatch our maintenance teams to sites on a daily basis. Our control centre can remotely operate and reset our equipment which allows us to have better availability.
Alkane's team of skilled service technicians and electrical engineers maintain the fleet. The limited number of engine types that we deploy has strategic benefits in terms of increased operations and maintenance experience across the portfolio. The operation and maintenance of the equipment is all carried out in house and the team have industry leading technology of gas reciprocating engines. They also undertake all of the required servicing and maintenance work on all of our engines to optimise engine performance in a competitive market.
As well as maintaining the equipment associated with the generation of power, the engineering team also look after the complex gas pumping equipment and systems where they draw gas from abandoned mines sometimes as deep as 1000m below the surface. The gas pumping equipment used allows the abandoned mines to have suctions more than -800mbar.
Our electrical team have an in-depth knowledge of LV and HV electrical and are responsible for maintaining all of our electrical equipment. Where we install our own systems, the Team also carry out the maintenance on these together with annual and 5-yearly inspections on HV Transformers.
Alkane have developed a control system that is used to remotely monitor and operate our sites not just from the control room but also from the engineers' phones, IPad or Laptops. Our computerised system enables us to capture all relevant technical data for all plant at our sites so as to determine and effectively respond to issues that may arise.
We have developed strong relationships with the relevant network operators and with National Grid in providing balancing services.
Almost all of our sites utilise fast starting flexible gas-fuelled reciprocating engines. Each of the generating sets have a capacity of 1-3MWe. Alkane also has a gas turbine that operates on kerosene and can generate 26MWe.
