Background: Gas to Power

Our market is the specialist clean-tech gas to power market covering methane extraction from coal mine methane (CMM), landfills, biomass and water treatment where we estimate we have a growing 2% market share.

  • CMM accounts for 10% of the gas to power market and Alkane is the market leader in this sector
  • The CMM sector of the UK gas to power market is expected to grow and Alkane is looking to expand through opening new CMM power plants and acquisition opportunities in other gas to power sectors where the returns are comparable to current portfolio.
  • Landfill gas is the largest element within specialist gas with around 1,000MWs of installed capacity.  With ever-tighter regulation over the use of landfill, we expect to see a decline in output in this sector over the medium term.
  • Biogas is the smallest element in the sector. However with more favourable government renewable status the biogas market is expected to grow substantially over the coming years.
