The Kyoto Protocol is a significant part of the international response to increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. It came into force in February 2005 and sets emission targets and GHG reduction commitments averaging 5% for developed countries for 2008 to 2012, including methane, by 2008-2012.
The UK’s target is even more ambitious at 12.5% for the same period and from 2006 abandoned mine methane will, for the first time, be recognised in the revised 1990 Kyoto baseline.
