Coal Mine Methane

Coal Mine Methane (CMM) is a hazardous waste gas more than 22 times more hazardous than Co2.

  • CMM is found in working and abandoned mines.
  • If not properly vented CMM escapes into the atmosphere from working or abandoned coal-mines.
  • Huge reservoirs of CMM can collect in the large void spaces within abandoned mine workings.
  • Typically CMM is a mixture of 60-75% methane, the remainder being a mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It is not suitable for compression or direct injection into the natural gas pipeline but through Alkane's established technologies this hazardous waste gas can be converted to electricity.
